PERIODONTITIS is also connected with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction

Periodontitis, pyorrhea or gum´s inflammation with bone involvement is disease that involves inflammation and infection of the ligaments and bones that support the teeth. A disease that, beyond causing the destruction of the bone mass that supports the dental pieces and causes the loss of teeth, is associated with an increased risk of life-threatening illnesses such as cardiovascular problems and some types of cancer.

It is established that maintaining good oral health is key to enjoy good general health, and more particularly, of good sexual health.
In fact, a study conducted by researchers at the First Affiliated Hospital of the Medical University of Canton (China) shows that men with periodontitis have a higher risk of erectile dysfunction, ie the inability to achieve or maintain an erection to have a satisfying sexual relationship.

Beyond gums

To carry out this research or 'meta-analysis', the authors analyzed the results of five studies carried out between 2009 and 2014 with the participation of 213,006 participants aged between 20 and 80 years.

The results showed that erectile dysfunction was much more frequent in men receiving treatment for chronic periodontitis, especially in those younger than 40 years and those over 59.

And, exactly, how common is this disorder among patients with periodontitis? As it has been observed, after discarding the possible influence of diabetes, the presence of periodontitis was associated with a probability up to 2.8 times greater of suffering from erectile dysfunction.

Periodontitis has been associated with different chronic diseases, so daily interdental hygiene should be recommended to reduce dental plaque and gingival inflammation. And in this context, it is necessary for physicians to be aware of the potential role that periodontal disease plays in the development of erectile dysfunction.
